I had a message last summer from a gentleman in Afganistan.
He had written because he felt depressed.
Life is tough there.
Not much opportunity.
All plans, in Kabul, needed to be short term.
Not enough work.
I had the following exchange:
"… I thought that it couldn’t get worse. It did. Much worse.
There were many times that I felt lost and that it was all pointless.
But then I read a couple of things that I want to share with you –
'Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom' — Viktor Frankl
This quote was not new to me.
I had read it before but this time it took on new meaning.
I began to realise that I was choosing my own state.
I was choosing to follow all the negative thoughts around me (and frankly I felt that I had good reason).
The thing is, there are at least an equal number of positive thoughts and that any time. I could turn my attention to them, and my suffering and hopelessness would diminish.
This is what ultimately lead me to meditation.
First oral chanting, which was AMAZING for lifting my spirit, and now mindfulness. I hope that meditation can help you.
What I eventually learned is that by helping other people I was also helping myself.
You appear… Full of life.
Note that those feelings you have are just that, feelings, and that you can choose to turn to the positive ones. "
Be Well.
